1.1 - Pray Salat al-Istikhara for Istiqdar

Now that you have already done Salat al-Istikhara (the Prayer of Guidance) to decide whether or not to join this program, do another Salat al-Istikhara.

Why? Well, the Scholars ('Ulama) teach us that the Salat al-Istikhara can be done and utilized in two ways:

  • The first way is to 'seek guidance' (Istikhara) regarding a specific situation or decision that you need to make in life. This is the more commonly known version of Salat al-Istikhara. The matter can be of significant importance (e.g. getting married) or it can be not as significant (e.g. whether to travel somewhere or not). All Prayers of Guidance are done for lawful things (halal).
  • The second--and lesser known--way the Scholars teach is to use Salat al-Istikhara is to 'seek Allah's omnipotent power' (Istiqdar) to help you undertake the matter that you have already decided.

For example, you prayed Salat al-Istikhara with the intention of seeking guidance from Allah Most High to help you decide whether or not to accept a business contract for work. You get indication from Him to proceed, or you observe it being facilitated for you. The doors just seem to open. You understand from that the answer of your Salat al-Istikhara. You then pray yet another Istikhara prayer but now with the intention of Istiqdar, or seeking Allah's omnipotent power to give you the ability to undertake it, to further express your servanthood.

In short, Salat al-Istikhara is an expression of slavehood and neediness to Allah Most High. We don't know what Allah Most High knows, and we completely give up our will in what we want and ask Allah Most High to give us what is best. The best Salat al-Istikhara is when you completely remove your preferences and perceived abilities and let Allah Most High choose and give you strength.

From the Sahih of al-Bukhรคri that Jabir ibn 'Abdullah (R) & reported: "The Messenger of Allah (S) used to teach us how to seek guidance in all our affairs, just as he would teach us a surah (chapter) from the Qur'an. He said: 'When any one of you intends to do anything then he should perform two rak'ahs of supererogatory salah (prayer). Then he should say:

O Allah, I seek guidance [istikhara] from You through Your knowledge; I seek strength through Your omnipotence [istiqdar]; and I implore You through Your immense grace. For You have power and I have no power, You know and I do not know, and You are the Knower of all unseen things. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and my ultimate destiny (or he said: my immediate concern and its final outcome) then decree it for me, make it easy for me and bless me in it. But if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and my ultimate destiny (or he said: my immediate concern and its final outcome) then turn it away from me and turn me away from it and decree good for me wherever it may be, then make me pleased with it.
